Holiday Party Closure

Be sure to stock up on Saturday and early Sunday, because we'll be closing at 4PM on Sunday the 22nd to engage in our annual holiday-related revelry. We'll be entirely closed Monday the 23rd in order to recover from the previous night's shenanigans. Trust us, you don't want to see one of us attempt to ring you up the day after one of our holiday parties. We'll be back to normal hours on Tuesday. Cheers!

Cigar Spotlight

We at Bottleworks work long, grueling hours outside of the shop so we can be sure to have as much knowledge of the product as we can. It's a tough sacrifice to have to walk home with a cigar, or drink a few beers after work but it's our commitment to the customer that keeps us pushing along. We get to share the results of our hard beer research every day with recommendations but don't as often get to shine light on our cigar selection. Here today we present one of our more popular cigars.

Thunder by Nimish has become a staff favorite and due to the strenuous and frequent sampling we do to ensure quality, we seem to run through them alarmingly fast. Nimish Desai is Rocky Patel's cousin, and like many other Nicaraguan dominated Rocky Patel smokes, this one delivers. The Thunder line features a beautiful, oily Ecuadorian Habano wrapper around both a Nicaraguan binder and filler. Ecuadorian wrappers have taken off as of late, and for good reason. Habano, Sumatra, and I hate to admit it, Connecticut leaves grown in Ecuador are all being given much acclaim.

The Thunder is described as a medium-full bodied smoke with peppery notes throughout, finishing with espresso flavors. I found the smoke itself very rich, medium bodied, and thought the black pepper toned down about halfway through smoking, blending the coffee flavors with a warm earthiness.

We carry a Robusto (4.5"X54) and a Torpedo (6.2"X52). Our supply on these guys for the moment seems to be steady which is good, because once the weather warms up just a little, we expect these to be an even faster seller. Stop in and pick a few up today.

Besides the huge beer selection of properly stored beers that we are known for, we also stock an ever growing number of ciders and meads. Brasserie McAuslan Launch

Sunday, October 30th from 4PM until close we'll be hosting the launch of Brasserie McAuslan in Washington. We're very honored as McAuslan is one of the oldest and most respected craft breweries in Quebec. Founded in 1989 in Montreal, they were the first craft brewery in the province to bottle their beers. They have since won numerous medals in international competitions for their world-class ales and were well-regarded by The Beer Hunter, Michael Jackson.

We'll be pouring samples of the St-Ambroise Oatmeal Stout and the St-Ambroise Vintage Ale 2009. We'll of course have bottles of both available along with a limited amount of the St-Ambroise Citrouille Pumpkin Ale. The always effervescent Dan, from Orcas Distributing, will be here to answer any questions and give out hugs.

Ninkasi Brewers Night

Join us this Thursday from 6-9PM for an evening of Ninkasi beers. We will be tasting all the beers from their new 4 pack, including a new imperial stout. Additionally we will have a special vintage draft offering and a fresh hop offering to try. So bring a friend, bring a growler, and bring a $1, because that's all it'll cost you to sample all the beers.

Fresh Hop Season

Starting this Friday, the day after our Ninkasi Brewing Company night, we will start the flood of fresh hop beers on draft. Availability of fresh hop beers in kegs was much greater this year and we have far more kegs than we do taps. Originally we had planned to put them all on at once but since we can't fit them all we figure why not spread them out over the course of a month so that if you can't make it one day, you are sure to get some the next. Starting on that Friday (the 14th), we will have around 3 or 4 fresh hop beers on draft at any one time until we run out of kegs. So come by Friday, then check our blog to see what we have on draft and come back often. All of our fresh hop beers will be available for growler fills and no, they do not make a fresh hop Pliny the Elder.

Cider Summit Tasting

Christmas in July!

New Belgium Sensory Evaluation Class

Join New Belgium Brewing Company's own Jamie Mastin for an afternoon of beer education. He will start with an overview of the off flavors/aromas commonly found in beer. Then each attendee will learn how to identify off-flavors and what causes them. You will never experience beer the same way again! Following will be a discussion about wild yeast strains. We will taste examples of New Belgium Brewing's own beers that are made with wild yeasts as well other examples such as Cantillon and Cascade. Take home a free New Belgium globe glass as well. The class is only open to 16 lucky individuals and is first-come, first-served. Sign up by stopping by the shop with your $5 entrance fee.

Erik Carels from Snoqualmie Falls Brewing Company will be here to debut Plant 1 Powerhouse IPA. We'll be tapping the keg at 5PM and running a special on growlers all evening. Be sure to grab a bottle or two on your way out if you want any to enjoy at home, we'll be the only place to get them during Seattle Beer Week.

In the heart of the city and at the home of the famed Space Needle – for one day Seattle Center will be transformed into Seattle's Biggest Cigar Lounge benefiting CIGAR RIGHTS OF AMERICA.

Adults will converge for a weekend of on site indulgence, lifestyle vendors, cigar retailers, fine cuisine, Pacific Northwest wine sampling, premium spirits sampling with a large portion of all of these elements hailing from right here in the Pacific Northwest. Cigar enthusiasts from around the Pacific Northwest will converge to ply their passion for cigars, reunite with old friends, make new friends, and celebrate the cigar culture. Winter Holiday Solstice Yuletide Cellar Sale Extravaganza Event!

This Sunday, December 19th, we're having our rumored and much anticipated Winter Holiday Solstice Yuletide Cellar Sale Extravaganza Event. As the days reach their shortest length, the nights turn their coldest, and Christmas music loses its charm, we give a small, brief glimpse into the vast cavern of our massive cellar by selecting just a few of its many gems. Last week we ventured down into the darkness, candle light reflecting off the vaulted ceilings as we brushed past the cobwebs to dust off some rare offerings.

Due to the small number of some of these fine beers, we will be imposing bottle limits to spread the love around. Since our space is limited and the amount of beer we will be releasing is even more limited, we will not (read will NOT) be releasing everything right at 11AM. You're free to camp out on the sidewalk the night before but first through the door does not mean you will get a chance to buy all we will be releasing. So stop by Sunday, we will do our best to make cellar releases available throughout the day. We do not have a schedule of release times nor will we say what is going to be released. We will not be taking orders over the phone and no bottles will be held. Lastly, don't make a huge mistake and forget that 100% of our cellared beers taste better (and will age better) if you wear one of our new Bottleworks t-shirts or sweatshirts. See you then. -Shaughn

Thank you very much to everyone who came out last night to our tap unveiling! For those of you who weren't able to make it out, we have extended our draft beer line up from 5 to 9 taps. We also have new hours! We will be here until 11pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. As always beer is available to go and for consumption in the store. Liefmans Kriekbier

It's not often that we take the time to profile individual beers here on the blog, but we thought this one was worth the mention. This week we received a shipment of one of the last batches of Kriekbier that Liefmans produced before their bankruptcy and subsequent buyout by Duvel Moortgat. We're still waiting for the new batches from the revitalized brewery to show up in our state, but in the meantime we have the chance to sample a bit of their history. This batch is from 2007 according to the cork and is tasting better than ever. Age has dried the beer out a bit and the tart smack of acidity allows the fruit to really shine.

Here's how the brewery described the beer:

"The Kriek is made with a completely different method from Kriek Lambic. It starts with old brown ale which is macerated with fresh, whole Danish and Belgian cherries [13 kg per 100 liters] in shallow, horizontal tanks for at least six months. Then it matures for about 1 year and afterwards is blended with Oud Brun and Cuvee Brut or Goudenband of different ages. Brewer's tasting notes: 'Light malting, superb fruit aroma, brandy-ish flavors, and delicate sweetness are balanced against subtle acidity.'"

Washington Cider Tasting

This Monday (July 12th) we have a very special tasting at Bottleworks. We will have five Washington cider makers here, each pouring two of their chosen products. We will be pouring ciders from Finnriver Farm & Cidery from Chimacum, Red Barn Cider from Mt.Vernon, Snowdrift Cider Co. in East Wenatchee, Tieton Cider Works located in Tieton, and Wildfire Cider from Port Townsend.

The tasting will feature a broad range of cider styles and flavors including: a pear cider from Red Barn, an effervescent sparkling cider from Finn River and a tannic and still German style cider from Wildfire. Due to the size of the tasting flight, the cost will be $4. The event will run from 5-7 pm, but we suggest arriving early to give yourself time to sample all that Washington's cideries have to offer.

Beer Week's Last Call

If you're anything like us you've probably already had your share of beer over the past Seattle Beer Week. Well, it's time to rally once again and make it over to the Hale's Palladium on Sunday for the "Last Call" beer festival. The big Beer Week wrap-up festivities start at noon and finish at 5 so you can still wake up fresh and ready to work Monday morning. 22 different Washington breweries will be there including old favorites like Anacortes, Big Time and Flyer's alongside newcomers like Airways, Fremont Brewing and Naked City will be there pouring over 33 different beers; many of which are special one-off batches. You can pick up your tickets here ($25 with designated driver tickets for $5 sold at the door) but you'd better hurry because they're going fast. Join us there to raise a "Cheers!" to the Seattle Beer Collective and participating breweries for all their hard work.

We'll have our local brewery representative here to provide answers to any of the numerous questions you're sure to have about all of their great brews. We'll be pouring bottles of Mighty Arrow, Ranger IPA, Eric's Ale and La Folie and tapping a keg of the Dark Heather Saison. As always it's just $1.
